Sample Career Portrait
Factory Worker
Style
Work Type:
My work type is ISTP and my style is
that of a "practical analyzer." I donít like a line of bull!
When people try to convince me of something, it needs to be
logical. I like action and I can work hard without getting tired.
I am shy except with my family and best friends. I like working
in a factory where things get done and everyone is focused on
solving problems when they come up. I like to tell the truth
about how I see things. I am very loyal to my friends and generous
to my family.
Career Type:
My primary career type is "realistic."
I have good mechanical and athletic ability. I like concrete
things like cars and boats and tools and good equipment. I prefer
action to words. I like to produce useful things that are well
made. I prefer working outdoors when Iím not in the factory.
I have had some jobs outdoors and they have been the best ones
yet. My secondary career type is "conventional." I like to be
precise, well organized, and work in structured situations.
I make friends slowly and have a small group of long-term close
friends that have the same interests I do. My tertiary career
type is "social." I think more people should take responsibility
for having their towns work better including the schools and
the police and other services. I am active in the local political
club and like to have an influence on the way things get done.
I also help raise money for the scouts and other groups for
kids.
Motivation
Work Environment Interests:
I like working with people who are reserved
and impassive, average in intelligence, satisfied with getting
their jobs done and meeting standard goals, skeptical and questioning,
and who are willing to let me do things my own way as long as
the results are achieved. I like best working in a rural setting,
preferably outdoors, in the same place that I go to every day,
sometimes indoors in a factory, but also on a loading dock or
in a terminal.
Career Drivers:
My primary career driver is "security."
I was born in the town I work in, have all of my friends and
family here, and would quit my job before I would leave town.
My secondary career driver is "life-work balance." I am more
interested in making sure that I have a balanced life that includes
family, friends, hobbies, than have it be just about work. I
like to work and think I am good at what I do, but thereís more
to life than just work.
Values and Needs:
The most important things to me are
location, exercising competence, physical challenge, independence,
and job tranquility. What I want more of is play, precision
work, making decisions, respect from others, and status. To
get these things, I would have to become a supervisor, which
I have been avoiding because I am not sure I want too much responsibility
at work that might interfere with the rest of my life.
Work Activitiy Interests:
I like driving, fixing automobiles,
installing heavy equipment, metalwork, and operating woodworking
tools.
Skills
(People, Data, Physical, Adaptive):
The skills that I do best are assembling
things, diagnosing mechanical problems, using power tools, following
instructions, and thinking logically. If I want to be a supervisor
I need to be able to lead others, manage people, motivate others,
plan work assignments, and maintain schedules. I can take supervisory
courses at work if I request them.
I am alert, conscientious, self-starting,
physically strong, and industrious. I need to be more motivated,
open to ideas, ambitious, encouraging of others, and people-oriented.
Internal Barriers
I feel blocked by my fear of taking
responsibility, being naive politically, having poor listening
skills, being confronting to others, and having a low frustration
tolerance.
