Sample Career Portrait
Senior Corporate
Manager / Executive
Style
Work Type:
My work type is ESTJ and my style is
that of a "fact-minded, practical organizer." I like to organize
people and projects and make sure that they are completed. My
prime focus is on getting the job done. I have always been practical,
realistic, matter-of-fact, with a natural head for business
and leadership. I like projects where the results of my work
and my teamís efforts are immediate, visible, and tangible.
I can be tough when necessary, but I am also objective and logical.
I am interested in having people around me who are entirely
focused on getting the job done. I believe there should be rewards
for meeting goals. I also enjoy community activities when they
are meaningful and I have an opportunity to make an important
contribution.
Career Type:
My primary career type is "enterprising."
I have always been drawn to a leadership role in any organization
I have been in and consider myself aggressive and self-confident
with good social and political skills. I prefer to work in a
hard-driving, results-oriented environment with like-minded
people. I communicate very effectively and have a wide network
of professional colleagues and friends with whom I communicate
regularly. My secondary career type is "social." I am active
in my community and enjoy working for useful causes. I like
to use my leadership abilities to benefit others. I gravitate
toward people who match my lifestyle and intellectual interests.
My tertiary career type is "conventional." I value economic
achievement, material possessions, and status. I like my company
to be well organized with structured rules where people are
contributing to the overall success of the team.
Motivation
Work Environment Interests:
I want the people around me to be active,
fast moving, and energetic. They should be critical and demanding
of excellence from themselves and me. I want them to be well
above average in skill and intelligence, and constantly pressing
toward higher levels of performance. I like working in the city,
but also enjoy traveling to many different places. My office
needs to be well-appointed, and I prefer the immediate surrounding
to be quiet and low-keyed. At some point in my career I would
like an assignment that would allow me to live in Paris.
Career Drivers:
My primary career driver is "managerial
influence." My key motivation is to advance up the corporate
ladder to higher levels of responsibility, to find opportunities
to serve in positions of leadership, to make an increasing contribution
to the overall success of the organization, and to have a long-term
opportunity for high income and estate-building. I have always
worked hard to excel in all three areas of leadership and have
an MBA as well as a considerable experience with high level
management development courses in analytical competence, interpersonal
competence, and emotional competence. My secondary career driver
is "power and leadership." I like to win, be successful, overcome
obstacles, be the best, be first, beat the competition, and
reach for my highest.
Values and Needs:
I feel strongly about the following
values and diligently maintain them in my worklife: leadership,
status, power and authority, profit, gain, and high earnings.
The values and needs that I feel are not yet satisfied in my
worklife include nurturing and helping others, leisure, prestige
and recognition, intellectual status, and adventure/excitement.
Work Activitiy Interests:
The kind of jobs I enjoy most are managing people, advocating
positions, building teams, inventing new ways of doing things,
and solving organizational problems.
Skills
(People, Data, Physical, Adaptive):
The skills at which I excel and which
I feel have allowed me to be successful include acting assertively,
influencing others, delegating responsibility, managing people,
and making decisions. The skills that I am currently working
on to improve in my worklife include understanding behavior,
listening attentively, reading technical information, showing
warmth and support, and writing creatively.
I consider the following adaptive skills
as a source of strength: being challenge seeking, imaginative,
self-disciplined, resourceful, and a risk-taker. In order to
round out my executive abilities, I need to be more encouraging
of others, tolerant of othersí mistakes, patient, versatile,
and expressive.
Internal Barriers
The following barriers have at times
kept me from achieving all that I could and will need to be
managed more consciously: all-or-nothing behavior, distrust
of intuition, inflexible, sense of lack of creativity, and perfectionism.
